The Penny Hoarder Power Panel + Workshop: Brews & Side Gigs

Want to grow a side hustle and make extra money without quitting your 9-to-5? Dream of becoming a full-time entrepreneur but prefer to have a cushion first?

We get it because we’re dreamers and doers, too. Whether you’re seeking an additional income stream or a creative outlet, or need to get out from cubicle life, you’ll want to join us and other like-minded people in the Tampa Bay area for our event, Brews & Side Gigs.

This is an event where you’ll have the opportunity to hear and learn from an all-star panel of people who are bringing in more than $500 each month from their side hustle. Some of our panelists have even made the leap and successfully turned their side hustle into full-time work.

What You’ll Learn

In this panel and workshop, you’ll learn how to jumpstart your side hustle. Brews & Side Gigs will address the questions you have including:

  • How do I find a profitable idea?
  • Do I need a website?
  • How do I avoid getting in trouble with my employer?
  • How do I balance my side hustle while maintaining a 9-to-5?
  • How do I get my first customer?
  • Do I need to form an LLC?
  • How do I turn my side hustle into my full-time work?

Tickets to the event will include:

  • Access to event, which includes an interactive panel on the A-to-Z of side hustles
  • A casual event experience where you will have the opportunity to ask any question you have in a friendly, judgment-free zone

  • An opportunity to meet and network with like-minded Tampa Bay area community members in a fun, casual environment

Meet the hustlers maintaining a 9-to-5 and a side hustle, or those who had a side hustle and completely took the leap to make their side hustle a full-time job:

Tamara LushFull Time: Editor, Associated Press | Side Hustle: Author, Romance Novels

Tamara Lush writes steamy and emotional contemporary romance stories set in tropical locations. Some of the time, her books are funny. Her novel Constant Craving was a 2018 RWA RITA® finalist in erotic romance. She’s married to an Italian and lives near a beach in Florida. She’s also an award-winning journalist. In 2017, she was one of 24 writers chosen by Amtrak to ride around the United States on a train and write fiction. Tamara’s a fan of vintage pulp fiction book covers, Sinatra-era jazz, 1980s fashion, tropical chill, kombucha, gin, tonic, seashells, iPhones, Art Deco, telenovelas, coloring books, street art, coconut anything, strong coffee, and newspapers.

Jennifer JacobsFormer Side Hustler Turned Full Time: Wandering Whisk

Wandering Whisk Bakeshop is a Boutique Bakery Studio specializing in modern, colorful buttercream cakes & custom-made sweets from scratch. Owner Jennifer Jacobs is a self-taught cake designer with a former career in the entertainment industry. After operating Wandering Whisk out of her home for over 4 years, her dream has come true to open her first brick & mortar bakeshop. There are two things that leave Jen feeling inspired: traveling and baking. She has combined her love of those two things & wants to bring that inspiration to you through her whimsical desserts. Jennifer was a competitor on Food Network’s ‘Holiday Baking Championship: Christmas in July’ in 2019. She has sharpened her pastry skills through courses at the San Francisco Baking Institute & Le Cordon Bleu Paris.

Brendan SmithFull Time: Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters | Side Hustle: St. Petersburg Craft Coffee Tour

Brendan Smith was born and raised in St. Petersburg Florida. Brendan has worked in both coffee and in corporate leadership roles for many years. Most recently, Brendan started the St. Pete Coffee Tour as a way to share his love of craft coffee with the masses. By day, Brendan is the regional sales and outreach manager for Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters. He works out of a warehouse turned coffee lab and office in downtown St. Pete where he spends his time talking coffee, perfecting his espresso, and conducting staff trainings for Batdorf’s wholesale partners. Brendan also has an additional side gig as a wedding DJ and emcee. Needless to say, weekends fill up quickly!

Erin CodyFull Time: Writer, Researcher | Side Hustle: AirBnB Host

Erin Cody graduated from Evergreen State College, then hightailed it to New York City, where she spent the next few years writing and working in event production. In early 2013, she joined Airbnb in an effort to make living alone in Manhattan less of a stretch. Erin now resides in St. Pete, writing for Ranker.com and Green Bench Monthly while toiling away at her first book. She bought her first home earlier this year, and rents out the separate guest house on Airbnb full-time as a source of (mostly) passive income.

George Smetzer, Full Time: Kobie Marketing | Side Hustle: Wedding Officiant

When he’s not at his full-time job at Kobie Marketing, George is a Wedding Officiant and Ceremony Consultant. Over the past six years, George has hitched more than 1,000 happy couples, and the occasional Bride-zilla and Groom-hilda. He does about four ceremonies a week outside of his 9-to-5. George has always been somewhat of a romantic, so he considers touching lives on their most special day a privilege and honor.

The Brews

You’ll enjoy delicious beverages courtesy of Green Bench Brewing in downtown St. Petersburg. Known for crafting unique beers, mead, and cider using a combination of fresh, local and traditional ingredients, Green Bench creates products that are enjoyed and embraced by many in the Tampa Bay community, while striving to challenge the status quo of taste in this area.

The Food

You’ll munch on delicious bowls from a St. Pete favorite, Ciccio Cali. In their own words, “We believe we are only as good as our ingredients, and the people who serve it. So, we keep it SIMPLE, FRESH and CLEAN. We have been established in the St Pete community for about 17 years and have slowly grown to include 3 more Ciccio CALI restaurants. We now have one locations in Brandon, North Tampa, and South Tampa!”

Are there any requirements to enter the event?

Attendees must be at least 21. Beyond that, this event is open to all genders and backgrounds. If you love sampling different beers and want to increase your knowledge around side hustles, then this event is for you!

Is there parking available?

There is street parking available right outside the building. In addition, there are plenty of garage parking spots — here is a map of available garage parking.
